One of these chapters is the Neogene period, which occurred between 23 and 2.5 million years ago. It was during this time that large mountain ranges such as the Himalayas, the Alps, and the Andes were formed.<\/p>\n<p>But what few people know is that during the Neogene, the Amazon also underwent surprising transformations.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-16687ee elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"16687ee\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3adad5a\" data-id=\"3adad5a\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5b84283 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5b84283\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>The Amazon was once invaded by the sea.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Millions of years ago, what is now a dense forest was once an environment partially covered by salt water. Over the course of 23 to 5 million years during the Miocene epoch, a subdivision of the Neogene, the Caribbean Sea occasionally overflowed into large areas of the Western Amazon region via natural waterways.<\/p>\n<p>These \u201cvisits\u201d from the sea left important marks: fossils of shark teeth, shells, microalgae, and small crustaceans have been found in sediments in the region. The goal was to better understand how and when salt water influenced the region.<\/p>\n<p>The area analyzed was the Solim\u00f5es Basin in the Western Amazon.
